7.1-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Japan, Tsunami Warning Issued
TOKYO — A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s southern Kyushu region on Tuesday, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning for parts of the country’s southern coastline and triggering emergency response measures.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture at a shallow depth, producing intense ground shaking across the region. Emergency earthquake alerts were issued to millions of residents, urging people to take immediate protective action.

Tsunami Warning Issued
Following the earthquake, the JMA issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas around the Ariake Sea and Yatsushiro Sea, warning that waves of up to 1 metre could reach affected coastlines.
Authorities advised residents near the coast to move to higher ground immediately and avoid beaches, ports, and river mouths until officials declare it safe to return.
Damage and Emergency Response
Initial reports indicate that the earthquake caused structural damage, power outages, transportation disruptions, and multiple injuries across parts of Kumamoto Prefecture.
