Instagram Now Lets Users Generate AI Images Using Other People’s Public Photos
Instagram has rolled out a new AI-powered feature that allows users to generate images using other people’s public Instagram photos. By simply tagging a public Instagram account in a prompt, Meta’s new AI system can use that person’s publicly shared images as visual references to create entirely new AI-generated artwork.
The feature is powered by Meta’s new Muse Image model, but it has already sparked widespread debate over privacy and user consent. (About Facebook)

How the Feature Works
Using Meta AI, users can now include an @mention of a public Instagram account in their prompt.
For example, someone could ask Meta AI to:
- Create a fantasy version of a public creator.
- Design a movie poster featuring a public profile.
- Generate custom artwork inspired by someone’s Instagram photos.
Meta AI then uses publicly available photos from that tagged account as references to generate the requested image. (About Facebook)
Public Accounts Are Included by Default
One of the biggest concerns surrounding the rollout is that public Instagram accounts are automatically eligible for the feature.
That means anyone with a public profile can have their images used in AI-generated creations unless they manually disable the setting or switch their account to private. Meta also says users won’t receive notifications if someone generates AI images using their public content. (MacRumors)
Privacy Concerns Grow
The launch has drawn criticism from privacy advocates and users who argue the feature provides too little control over how public photos are used.
Some of the concerns include:
- AI-generated images created without explicit permission
- No notification when public photos are used
- Potential misuse of someone’s likeness
- Existing AI creations remaining even after users opt out later
Critics say the feature blurs the line between public sharing and AI remixing, raising new questions about consent in the age of generative AI. (The Indian Express)
Meta Says Users Can Opt Out
Meta says users who don’t want their public content used for AI image generation can disable the feature through Instagram’s Sharing and reuse settings.
Turning the option off prevents future AI creations from using newly eligible content. However, Meta notes that AI-generated images created before opting out may remain available. (MacRumors)
Part of Meta’s Bigger AI Strategy
The new capability is powered by Muse Image, Meta’s latest image generation model developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs.
Beyond Instagram, Muse Image is also being integrated into Meta AI and WhatsApp, with additional expansion planned across Meta’s ecosystem as the company competes with other leading AI image generators. (About Facebook)
Bottom Line
Instagram’s new AI feature marks a major step toward personalized image generation by allowing users to create AI artwork using public Instagram profiles simply by tagging an account. While Meta says users have the ability to opt out, the default inclusion of public accounts and the lack of notifications have already sparked significant privacy concerns. As generative AI becomes more deeply integrated into social media, the balance between creative tools and user control is likely to remain a major topic of debate.
