India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan Resigns After Weeks of Nationwide ‘Cockroach Movement’ Protests
NEW DELHI, India — India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned following weeks of nationwide demonstrations led by the youth-driven Cockroach Movement, marking one of the biggest political developments in the country this year.
The protests began over allegations of major irregularities and paper leaks in national entrance examinations, with students and activists demanding accountability, reforms to the examination system, and Pradhan’s resignation. The movement quickly spread across multiple cities, drawing thousands of demonstrators and widespread public attention.
According to reports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi accepted Pradhan’s resignation after sustained public pressure. In his resignation letter, Pradhan said he was stepping down out of a sense of responsibility and to help restore confidence in India’s education system.
The Cockroach Movement has described the resignation as a significant victory but says its campaign is not over. Protest leaders continue to call for broader reforms, including stronger safeguards against examination fraud, greater transparency in recruitment and testing, and accountability for officials linked to the controversy.
The resignation represents one of the Modi government’s most notable concessions to a sustained nationwide protest movement in recent years. Analysts say the government’s next steps on education reforms will be closely watched by students, parents, and opposition parties alike.
